For my visual effects short, I have chosen to use the dura (a Fiji war canoe) I would have a replica build and place inside a water tank with green screen all around the set, wave machines would be at either side to mic rough sea. For the establishing or long shots that would be full CG. All of the animation would be done using Maya; we would render these shot using Nuke, Nuke would be used for composting any elements
The advantage of shooting on location is natural light and natural environments, having real elements in VFX heavy shot help the VFX artist to blend Cg elements with real ones.
The scene opens with four war canoes sailing rapidly through a close circlet of white sand islands that during high tide flood so that only the mangroves can be seen. These war parties are trying to catch up with their attacker who managed to raid their village and make off with gold, weapons and livestock. The warrior's ages can be distinguished, not from the colour of their hair, as they have none, but from their tribal tattoos and scars from spears and arrows. These men have been fighting this battle for years. As the canoes come out of the circlet, they see their enemy’s not far ahead; there ermines cove them self in bone power to appears as ghostly figure that come in the night. They outnumber them by a single canoe. The chieftain gives the signal and the men start rowing. The sails are altered to allow for a more constant amount of wind to flow through, there is a sharp pull as the sail catches these gust of winds. The rest is up to the rower’s four men on each side of the canoe rowing to the sound of the drums. Their enemies hear the looming drums and with only open water ahead of them, turn their canoes round to counter attack. Their great advantage is that the wind is in their favour - his men are all rested and ready to fight...their disadvantage is that their canoes will be rammed.
